The Kind of Love You Never Recover From

"The Kind of Love You Never Recover From"
by Hugh Blumenfeld and Dar Williams
written by Christine Lavin

I know a couple; she sits in her rocking chair, working her puzzles he watches TV upstairs.
Shes got a secret she has never let out, and she thinks he never knew about.
She hasnt seen him for 30 years, mention of his name doesnt bring on tears, if you ask her,
Are there any regrets? shell tell you no, but she never forgets.

It was the kind of love you never recover from.
Even though she found someone else to take his place, she never will escape the truth.
At times like this, when the moon is bright; when the air is foggy like it is tonight;
She thinks about what might have been, if she had just held on to him.

I know a man who has done it all: sailed the ocean, climbed the mountains of Nepal.
He lives high upon the avenue, with a beautiful wife, loving children too.
But theres a woman he still dreams about certain things hes learned to live without
If you ask him, Are there any regrets? hell tell you no, but he never forgets.

It was the kind of love you never recover from.
Even though he found someone else to take his place, he never will escape the truth.
At times like this, when the moon is bright; when the air is foggy like it is tonight;
He thinks about what might have been, if he had not let her slip away from him.

I read about a woman who said shed never regret anything shed ever done.
Such arrogant words always seem to be spoken by those who then die young.

So here am I, looking at you. Tell me what are we going to do?
Am I destined to be your regret? Are you the one Ill never forget?

Years from now will we rue the day, you let me let you walk away?
Isnt this too dear a price to pay, for the freedom of going separate ways?

This is the kind of love you never recover from.
People tell me Ill find someone else to take your place I never will escape the truth.
At times like this when the moon is bright when the air is foggy like it is tonight;
Think how sweet life could be, if you would stay with me, oh stay with me

This is the kind of love you never recover from.
Dont tell me Ill find someone else to take your place and try to face the truth.
Let me hold you close tonight the fog is lifting, and the moon is so bright.
Think how sweet life could be if you would stay with me, oh stay with me!
This is the kind of love you never recover from.
This is the kind of love you never recover from.

Secret Love

Come on it's time to go upstairs
But I don't want to be leaving you here
I can't go be in that room alone
When I know that you're down here in tears
I'm not asking "forever" from you
I'm just asking to be held for awhile
In a timeless search for love that might work
Still we're already paying the price
But you need some rest
My darling, it's best
But we've already passed it, I cried
Ooohee...
Listen to me
My secret love secretly
Died
Come on it's time to go upstairs
But I don't want to be leaving you here
I can't go be in that room alone
When I know that you're down here in tears

I'm not asking "forever" from you
I'm just asking to be held for awhile
In a timeless search for love that might work
Still we're already paying the price
But you need some rest
My darling, it's best
But we've already passed it, I cried
Ooohee..
Listen to me
My secret love secretly
Died
Oh, you need some rest
Oh, you need some rest
My darling, it's best
Ooh...
My secret love secretly
Secretly died

For What It's Worth

I got to sing, I got to dance
I got to be a part of a great romance
Still forbidden, still outrageous
Only a few around us knew
But no one said a word it was contagious
Looked out the window and watched the cars fly by
I look at you and I start to cry
What you did was you saved my life
I won't forget it

[Chorus:]
You said even if I left my girlfriend
Packed up my stuff
Loaded up my car
Drove down to your house
With good intentions came through your door
For what's it worth...

I got to love, I rode the rails
You came with me because you cared
I was broke and I was scared
You held my hand and took away my fear
We knew we couldn't last
And that was hard.

Looked out the window and watched the cars fly by
I look at you and I start to cry
What you did was you saved my life
I won't forget it

[Chorus:]
You said even if I left my girlfriend
Packed up my stuff
Loaded up my car
Drove down to your house
With good intentions came through your door
For what's it worth...

I got to sing, I got to dance
I got to be a part of a great romance
Still forbidden, still outrageous
Only a few around us knew
But no one said a word it was contagious
Looked out the window and watched the cars fly by
I look at you and I start to cry
What you did was you saved my life
I won't forget it

[Chorus:]
You said even if I left my girlfriend
Packed up my stuff
Loaded up my car
Drove down to your house
With good intentions came through your door
Oh, you said even if I left my girlfriend
Packed up my stuff
Loaded up my car
Drove down to your house
With good intentions came through your door
For what's it worth...
For what it's worth, for what it's worth...
